Top 20 of 2010 – Jake’s Picks

Well, it’s nearing the end of 2010, and I never thought we would ever get here. Okay, that was a lie; I knew we would get here, and it arrived a Hell of a lot quicker than I had ever imagined. For me, 2010 was a highly anticipated year in music. 2009 saw the birth of The Soda Shop and the subsequent discovery of countless bands, both old and new, and a lot of them gearing up to release an album in 2010.  From the beginning of the year, I was on a crusade to annex as many of the releases I could and then spent countless hours playing and replaying these albums all so I could combine the best of the best into an objective list for you to read at the end of the year. Not buying that lie, either? Fine, you got me. I did it for me and only me, but now you get to benefit from my hard work and dedication (i.e., addiction and laziness).

This countdown comes without any descriptions or thoughts on the albums. These albums speak volumes for themselves, and they certainly don’t need me to fail to give them their proper dues. Without further ado, I bring you the list (in reverse order) of the albums that impressed me the most:

20. Quest for Fire – Lights from Paradise
19. Asteroid – II
18. The Sword – Warp Riders
17. Whores of Tijuana – Psycholongevity
16. The Black Keys – Brothers
15. Kingsnake – Book of Promise
14. Venomin James – Crowe Valley Blues
13. Sweet Apple – Love & Desperation
12. Stone Axe - Stone Axe II
11. Brant Bjork – Gods & Goddesses
10. The Brought Low – Third Record
09. Karma to Burn – Appalachian Incantation
08. Skånska Mord – The Last Supper
07. The Brimstone Days – We Are the Brimstone Days
06. The Naked Heroes – 99 Diamond
05. Night Horse – Perdition Hymns
04. Sasquatch – III
03. Gozu – Locust Season
02. The White Soots – The White Soots

And finally, the album that my infinite wisdom deemed the best of the year (and, believe me, this was no easy task as many others were just as qualified to be #1):

01. Honcho – Battle of Wits

There you have it, folks. My top albums list of 2010. It was one Hell of a year for rock, and one I will look back on fondly. Fortunately, there’s no need to continue to dwell on the past. 2011 appears to be shaping up to be an impressive sequel to 2010.
